Dear Parents and Guardians,
With the passage of Senate Bill 178, Nebo School District has updated the policy governing student cell phone use. You can read the new policy in its entirety at Nebo District Student Electronic Use Policy or the summary below.
The Why Behind This Change:
The Nebo School Board recognizes that electronic devices serve as both beneficial tools and potential distractions. The Board also understands that excessive use of social media and constant notifications from personal electronic devices can negatively impact students' mental health and academic performance. In order to adhere to new state law, ensure an effective learning environment, promote respect and courtesy among students, and enhance student wellbeing, the Board has implemented this policy.
Policy Summary
Cell phone/smart watch use is not permitted during school hours (8:20 am - 3:05 pm).
Notifications must be turned off, and phones must be put away in a backpack, bag, or locker—including during lunch and passing periods.
Smart watches can be worn, but must not make sounds or receive/send messages.
You cannot use phones or watches in the hallway.
If you need to contact your parent/guardian, ask to go to the front office.
We ask for your support in reinforcing this policy at home by encouraging your student to leave personal devices at home whenever possible.
This new policy is based on advanced research showing that limiting access to personal devices improves academic outcomes, reduces social stress, and increases peer-to-peer interaction. A list of key resources and studies is linked below for your reference.
